Background

The Assist corporate group is Russia’s leading electronic payment service provider. Their clients are stores and marketplaces that want their customers to be able to pay for goods and services in a variety of ways, including bank cards and e-payment systems.

As the company put it, Assist is the middleman that provides clients with a unified API so that they can receive comprehensive reports, change their acquiring bank at any time without changing software, or work with multiple acquiring banks simultaneously.

Task

Assist has been in business since 1998. At that time, all of the company’s hardware and software was located in their office. Issues related to hardware access, power supply failure, and overheating all started to pop up. They had to take into consideration the floor load limits of the office building where the organization was located. By 2008, the company decided it was time to expand—to increase volume and capacity. After researching the market, management decided on Selectel.

Selectel’s Solution

Assist rented a server rack in one of Selectel’s data centers and hosted some its equipment there. The company noted that PCI DSS certification (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) occurs every year---an auditor verifies that all points of the standard are met. Since 2008, Selectel on its own initiative has taken measures to attain certification, particularly regarding physical security.

Then the question about where to store Russian citizens' personal data became an issue. Assist used to keep their CRM system in a cloud abroad. After the new law on personal data was implemented, they quickly migrated their data to a Russian cloud provider. This was a temporary solution as Assist wasn’t satisfied with the technical aspects of their cloud. Now they’re working out a permanent storage solution, and they have already chosen Selectel. The company soon plans to put together a fault-tolerant solution built on Selectel’s Virtual Private Cloud.

Results

According to Assist, the move not only raised fault-tolerance, but allowed them to save; hosting and maintaining equipment on their own was no longer sound and it would be better to let a professional company handle it.

This freed up a lot of space in their server room and let them add capacity. As a result, they can now process transactions significantly faster (five times faster for some operations).

Today, Assist works with over 3,000 companies all over the world. They have representative offices in Russia and Belarus. Their clients include: Google, OZON, the Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theatre, Bileter, HeadHunter, Ashan, and many more. Its partners include the largest banks in Russia and abroad: VTB 24, Raiffeisen bank, Belarusbank, Bank St. Petersburg, Russian Standard Bank, UCS, Absolute Bank, Credorax, and American Express.

With Assist, you can accept payments from bank cards and e-payment systems made over the Internet, mobile devices, and mPOS terminals. Assist works with all major cards (Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Diners Club, JCB, American Express, and MIR), and supports Apple Pay and Yandex.Money, WebMoney, and QIWI.
